This historical novel should be required reading for every high school student. It is also known under the title “Someone knows my Name”. Aminata Diallo, one of the strongest women characters in contemporary fiction, is kidnapped from Africa as a child and sold as a slave in South Carolina. Fleeing to Canada after the Revolutionary War, she escapes to attempt a new life in freedom.
At one point she is given the job of writing down all the Negroes names when they are transported to Nova Scotia promised with freedom and land. This is actually the very true part. There is such a log/book – Carleton Papers – Book of Negroes, 1783
Made me think and wonder about the plight of African Americans.
Why exactly did people so long ago think less of them?
How could anyone do this to another human being?
